Appraisal Institute

The Appraisal Institute is a global membership association of professional real estate appraisers, with 25,000 members and 91 chapters throughout the world. Its mission is to advance professionalism and ethics, global standards, methodologies, and practices through the professional development of property economics worldwide. Organized in 1932, the Appraisal Institute advocates equal opportunity and nondiscrimination in the appraisal profession and conducts its activities in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.

The Appraisal Foundation

In 1986, the instability in the real estate and mortgage lending professions led nine leading professional appraisal organizations in North America to form the Ad Hoc Committee on Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice. These groups agreed upon a generally accepted set of standards that were then adopted by the eight American appraisal organizations. With the adoption of the Standards, The Appraisal Foundation was established in 1987 to implement the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) through an independent board, the Appraisal Standards Board (ASB).

International Association of Assessing Officers

The International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) is the internationally recognized leader and preeminent source for innovation, education, and research in property appraisal, assessment administration, and property tax policy. The International Association of Assessing Officers is a nonprofit, educational and research association. It is a professional membership organization of government assessment officials and others interested in the administration of the property tax. The IAAO was founded in 1934, and now has a membership of more than 8,000 members worldwide from governmental, business, and academic communities.

Alabama Association of Assessing Officials

The Alabama Association of Assessing Officials, AAAO, is a professional association that is striving to promote equalization through the promotion of a professional educational program. The Alabama Association of Assessing Officials began in 1981. There are 400 members of the Association, as to date.

Auburn University Government and Economic Development Institute

The Alabama Department of Revenue, in cooperation with the Government and Economic Development Institute at Auburn University, provides an educational program to assure that state and county personnel achieve more equitable administration of the property tax laws of the State of Alabama. The program is designed to enhance appraisal, mapping, and management skills, so that participants may be certified by the State. Those eligible to achieve certification are the elected and appointed county property tax officials and employees, and the Property Tax Division employees of the Alabama Department of Revenue. Individuals that successfully complete the curriculum and pass a comprehensive certification exam earn the designation of Alabama Certified Appraiser of Real Property, Alabama Certified Appraiser of Personal Property, Alabama Certified Tax Administrator, Alabama Certified Mapper, or Support Staff Level I or II Certification.
