In accordance with §32-6-291 and 32-6-292, Code of Ala. 1975, retired military persons retired under honorable conditions, national guard retirees, and retired military reservists, or their spouse may, upon application to the licensing official, be issued United States Armed Forces Retired distinctive license plates. In accordance with §32-6-290, Code of Ala. 1975, the words “retired military” means only those persons who are non-disability retirees from active duty.

  • Retired military persons shall provide a DD214 form or any other documentation prescribed by law or administrative rule as evidence of qualification for the license plate.
  • Retired National Guardsmen must provide an NGB Form 22 or Notice of Eligibility for Retired Pay at Age 60 (20 year letter).
  • Retired military reservists must provide a Notice of Eligibility for Retired Pay at Age 60 (20 year letter)
  • A spouse must provide a dependent ID card.

Additional fees:

  • The retired military person or retired reservist or his or her spouse shall be issued the requested number of distinctive license plates or tags upon the payment of the regular license fee for tags, as provided by law, and the additional payment of a fee of three dollars ($3) for each plate issued. The applicant shall pay the additional three dollars ($3) fee for each additional license plate issued in the future, however in those years in which only a decal is issued the applicant shall pay the regular license fees for tags, as provided by law.
  • Upon the death of any retired military license plate recipient, the surviving spouse shall be entitled to retain the distinctive plate, upon the continued payment of the regular taxes and fees required by law, for (1) one private motor vehicle owned by the surviving spouse for the remainder of the lifetime of the surviving spouse or until the remarriage of the spouse.
  • The plates may not be personalized.
  • The distinctive license plate follows the owner and is not transferable between vehicle owners.
  • The net proceeds of the $3 are distributed to the Alabama Veterans’ Assistance Fund.
