SUBJECT: Redesigned and Discontinued License Plates (MVD Memo 2022-008)

The following redesigned license plates will be available for issuance beginning January 1, 2023:

  • Educator
  • Retired Educator
  • Fighting Cystic Fibrosis
  • Fraternal Order of Police
  • Mending Kids Heart
  • University of Mississippi (Ole Miss)
  • Alabama Tennis Foundation
  • Stop Domestic Violence
  • Firefighter

The following license plates were discontinued as of December 31, 2022, and should NOT be available for issuance or renewal as of January 1, 2023:

  • Generic Race-Nascar
  • Generic Race-Dale Earnhardt
  • Generic Race-Richard Petty
  • Generic Race-Nascar Track
  • Generic Race-Chase Elliot
  • Generic Race-Clint Bower
  • Generic Race-Dale Earnhardt Jr.
  • Generic Race-Jimmie Johnson
  • Generic Race-Kevin Harvick
  • Generic Race-Kyle Busch
  • Generic Race-Martin Truex Jr.
  • Kings Home

The sponsoring organizations for the following license plates elected to retain their current designs. However, they will be replaced with plates that have the new numbering scheme and without decal pockets. The plates will be available for issuance beginning January 1, 2023:

  • Rescue Squad
  • State Parks Supporter
  • Children’s Trust Fund
  • Generic Race-The Alabama Gang
  • Generic Race-Ford Racing

A supply of license plates based on the number of current registrations in each county has been ordered and should be arriving soon. Personalized license plates may be ordered on demand through the Plate Reservation and Ordering System (PROS). Beginning January 1, 2023, discontinue the issuance of license plates with the old design and retain for audit purposes.
