SUBJECT: Updates Related to Disability Access Distinctive License Plates and Placards
Legislative Act 2018-474 was signed into law by Governor Ivey on March 28, 2018. Effective immediately, in addition to a licensed physician, a certified registered nurse practitioner and a certified nurse midwife is authorized to provide certification for disability access parking privileges.
Legislative Act 2018-261 was signed into law by Governor Ivey on March 20, 2018. Effective June 1, 2018, a parent, stepparent, or legal guardian of a minor or an adult who is an individual with a disability as defined in Section 32-6-230, Code of Alabama 1975, may apply for a disability access distinctive license plate or placard. Additionally, this act provides that it shall be unlawful to park a motor vehicle in an area reserved for handicapped parking unless the individual with a disability is in the vehicle.
The revised Application for Disability Access Parking Privileges (MVR 32-6-230) may be found on the Motor Vehicle Division web page under “Forms.”
