MONTGOMERY, Oct. 16, 2017 – The Optional Personal Property Assessment Link (OPPAL) Web portal opened on Oct. 1 to accept business personal property tax returns through Jan. 31, 2018.
Launched in 2016, OPPAL is an optional, free, reporting-only portal that provides a more efficient way for Alabama businesses to report equipment, tools, machinery and other business personal property online. Electronically filed returns contain the same information included in standard paper tax returns and are submitted to the county assessing official or applicable agency where the tax returns are required to be filed.
The OPPAL system is only utilized for the filing of business personal property tax returns and does not provide for the administration or enforcement of business personal property taxes. Returns must be filed timely; those that are submitted after Dec. 31 will be subject to penalties for late filing.
More than 28,000 taxpayers statewide submitted returns through OPPAL in its inaugural filing season, taking advantage of the online convenience of the portal. OPPAL was designed per the requirements of Section 40-7-56, Code of Alabama, 1975.
